U.S. President Donald Trump announced steep tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States last week prompting countermeasures from Canada. On Monday, a 30-day pause in the implementation of the tariffs was announced.
Over the weekend, NHL fans in Ottawa and Vancouver, and NBA fans in Toronto booed the U.S. national anthem as home teams played visiting American teams.
While there was some brief booing of O Canada ahead of the Ottawa Senators game Monday night, when the anthem ended, there were also cheers.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday as part of the pause on tariffs, Canada would appoint a ‘Fentanyl Czar’ and reinforce the border with equipment and personnel. Trump has pointed to fentanyl crossing into the U.S. from Canada as a reason for his tariff plan, despite less than one per cent of cross-border fentanyl seizures in the U.S. coming from Canada, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
